Sports and Recreation Facility Renovation and Expansion Project

With the move to Division I and the Big Sky Conference, the Northern Colorado Department of Athletics is making enhancements in many areas. One of the biggest areas that will be addressed is the enhancement of facilities.

Thanks to the passing of a student referendum on April 7, 2005, $16 million dollars in funds were secured to improve facilities at the Butler- Hancock Athletic Sports Complex, the Jackson Sports Complex and the Student Recreation Center. The Northern Colorado soccer team will be moving across campus into the renovated Jackson Soccer Complex, the Butler-Hancock Athletic Fields will receive new synthetic turf, Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion will receive a major overhaul including new chairback seating and a new message center sound system. A new intercollegiate athletics practice center will also be added to the Campus Recreation Center.

Not only will Northern Colorado student-athletes benefit from the enhancements, but so will club and intramural sports, sports and exercise science classes, alumni, fans and friends of the university. The projects are currently in the design phase, with construction set to begin on most at the end of the 2005-06 school year.

"The action of the students with the referendum indicates their passion for the University of Northern Colorado," said Director of Athletics Jay S. Hinrichs. "The referendum will change the face of the university for generations to come.

"We plan to offer the use of these new facilities to the community of Greeley and host major athletic events on our campus."
