Head coach Jack Maughan enters his ninth season directing the women’s golf program at UNC in 2003-04. Maughan became head coach of both the men’s and women’s teams in 1995, when the women’s program was instituted, and relinquished the men’s duties at the end of the 2002-03 season to concentrate on the women’s team. Under his direction, the women’s team has continually improved. They captured a second consecutive North Central Conference title in 2000 and placed second each of the two years after that. For his efforts, Maughan was also named NCC Coach of the Year twice (1999 and 2000). The 2002-03 season marked a banner campaign for the women’s golf program, as the team finished third at the NCAA Division II Championships, the highest place finish in school history. On the way to the NCAA Championships, the Bears captured the North Regional crown for the first time in school history and Maughan was named Regional Coach of the Year for the third season in a row (2001-03). Maughan helped Emily Russell, who finished third individually at the NCAA Championships, earn NCGA All-American honors in 2002-03, as she became the first Bears’ golfer to earn that award. In total, the UNC team had a 94-8 record in head-to-head competition during the season and won eight of the 13 tournaments they entered. Maughan also serves as the UNC wrestling coach, a position he has held since 1987. Maughan-led wrestling squads have enjoyed success both at the conference and national levels. In 1991, the Bears posted a third-place finish at the NCAA Division II National Championships. A 1986 graduate of North Dakota State University, Maughan was a two-time wrestling All-American at the school. He earned his master’s degree in physical education and athletic administration from UNC in 1989. |
