Schedule/Results | Roster | News | Archives UNC Women's Tennis Places Five on NCAA Division I All-Independent Squad
EDINBURG, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won the Women's Tennis Independent Championship and had an almost perfect showing as they had eight All-Independent selections. Northern Colorado had five selections, IPFW had four selections and Texas-Pan American had two.
The UNC women's tennis team was represented on the first team by No. 3 singles player Renee Nuccio and No. 6 singles player Amber Alley. Nuccio went 15-7 this season, while Alley posted a singles record of 7-3 this season.
The Bears' second team honorees included No. 1 singles player Jan Ikeda, No. 2 singles player Meredith Krystofik and the No. 1 doubles team of Ikeda and Nuccio. Ikeda went 17-8 in singles this season. Krystofik posted a singles mark of 10-11. Ikeda and Nuccio teamed up to post a 10-6 mark at No. 1 doubles.
Krystofik and Nuccio were each honored as members of the All-Freshman team.
Ken DeKoning of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi received six first place votes to run away with the Coach of the Year Award. The Islanders went 3-0 at the Independent Championships and finished 9-6 on the season. Likewise, Carlotta Santos of TAM-CC ran away with the Player of the Year award. Santos, a sophomore from Lisbon, Portugal, was 12-0 at Number One Singles. The Freshman of the Year was a battle as Lisa Bartelheim of IPFW edged Lisa Brahim of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by two points to earn the award. Bartelheim was 9-4 at Number 4 Singles and 15-10 overall.
The All-Independent honors were voted on by the head coaches and sports information offices of IPFW, Northern Colorado, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas-Pan American.
