FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Despite cold temperatures and high winds, the Northern Colorado track & field team had some good performances at the Jack Christiansen Invitational, hosted by Colorado State. The women's squad finished in second with 121.5 points behind the host Rams with 180, while the men were third with 74 points, placing behind CSU (181) and Air Force (151). Freshman Kelly Coomes ran a season best time to win the 100 meter hurdles and improve her standing among the Big Sky Conference qualifiers with her time of 14.35. Sophomore Justine Sandersfeld won the 400 meters in 57.20, while Jillian Hoblitt was second in 59.31. Senior Ashley Stec placed third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.65 and sophomore Colleen Sanderlin led a pack of Bears across the finish line in the 5000 meters. Sanderlin finished second in 19:00.19, while Kellie Callahan was third (19:03.63) and Denise Kintzley was fourth (19:08.45). The 4x400 relay team of Stec, Hoblitt, Lauren Iseman and Sandersfeld continued to run well, crossing the tape in 3:57.67 for first place. The 4x100 relay squad of Stec, Sandersfeld, Coomes and Abby Weedor was second with a time of 48.71. In the field events, sophomore transfer Rachel Stevens won the high jump after clearing 5-5 while Brianna Plombon finished fourth in the long jump with her leap of 17-4.5. For the men, Tyler Hoerner won the 400 meters with a time of 49.34, while Collin Effler was third in 49.93. Freshman Terrence McGaughy continued to tear it up, winning the 100 meters in 10.69. The quartet of Richard Mattison, Effler, Hoerner and McGaughy won the 4x100 meter relay in 42.11, edging out Colorado State's team that clocked at 42.15. The 4x400 team of Hoerner, Travis Stanford, Effler and Wittmer was also victorious after running a 3:19.02. Junior Patrick Berg finished second in the discus, throwing 160-3. Northern Colorado will travel north next weekend to compete in the Front Range Championships, hosted by the University of Wyoming on Saturday. |
