Rob Upton Invitational

Saturday, March 29, 2008

Fort Collins, Colorado • Jack Christiansen Track • 10:00 a.m.

First Of Three

For the first of three times this season, the Bears will head to Fort Collins to compete in a meet hosted by Colorado State. This Saturday is the Rob Upton Invitational, named for a former student-athlete who was tragically killed in a hiking accident. NC will also compete at CSU in the Ram Open on April 19 and the Jack Christiansen Invitational on April 26.

Made To Be Broken

Sophomore Justine Sandersfeld continued to have a stellar season, breaking the school record in the 400 meters during the first week of the outdoor season. Sandersfeld clocked a 56.01 to win the event at the Potts Invitational. She breaks the old record of 56.10 held by Nancy Weber from 1997.

Big Sky Qualifying

Junior Patrick Berg qualified for the Big Sky Championship in all three circle throwing events, throwing 164-7 in the hammer, 52-4.75 in the shot put and 158-5 in the discus. Eight other Bears joined Berg on the qualifying lists as freshman Kelly Coomes did so in the 100 hurdles, Justine Sandersfeld in the 400 meters, Ashley Stec in the 400 hurdles and Rachel Stevens and Katie McConnell in the high jump. Freshman Terrence McGaughy qualified for the men in the 100, Tyler Hoerner in the 400 and Marty Wittmer in the 400 meter hurdles.

Indoor All-Conference

Both sophomore Justine Sandersfeld and sophomore Rachel Stevens were named to the Big Sky All-Conference Indoor Track & Field team after finishing in the top three in their respective events at the conference championship in Pocatello, Idaho.

Home Sweet Home

Next week, Northern Colorado hosts its lone meet of the season in the Tom Benich Invitational. Events are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. with the men's javelin and the men's steeplechase. The men's and women's hammer throw events will be conducted at Colorado State on Friday, April 4, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
