After completing a two-year pitching career with the Bears, Roy Allen returns to the program in 2007 as a volunteer assistant coach. Allen, a native of Lakewood, attended Alameda High School, Colby County Community College and Lamar Community College before ending up in a Bears uniform. As a junior in 2005, Allen appeared in 11 games and became the team's top set-up man. The season he was named the Division I Independent Newcomer of the Week on May 3 after his performance against BYU (allowing four hits and no runs in 4.1 innings of relief). As a senior Allen became one of the team's ace pitchers on his way to second-team Division I All-Independent honors. Allen compiled an earned run average fo 4.64, marking the first time in four seasons that a UNC pitcher had a sub-5.00 ERA while pitching more than 50 innings in a season. He ranked 10th among D-I Independent players in strikeouts (8.43/game) and walked only nine batters in 52.1 innings of work. Allen made his first four appearances of the season in relief and struggled (11.50 ERA) but had a 2.83 ERA in his final eight appearances of the season, all of which were starts. In his final six starts of the season (t No. 12 Arkansas, Washington State, Air Force, at No. 29 Wichita State, at Big 12 Tournament Champion Kansas and versus North Dakota State in the championship game of the D-I Independent Invitational;) he compiled a 2-2 record and 1.71 ERA. CAREER HIGHLIGHTS 2006 Division I All-Independent Second-Team Selection 2006: Division I All-Independent second-team selection ... appeared in 12 games, starting eight during his senior season ... led the team in ERA (4.64), marking the first time since the 2002 season (Toby Michael, 4.81) that a Northern Colorado pitcher with more than 50 innings pitched had an ERA lower than 5.00 ... ranked 10th among D-I Independents in ERA and sixth in strikeouts (8.43/game) ... was third on the Bears team in strikeouts (49) and walked only nine batters in 52.1 innings of work ... had a 5.4-to-1 strikeouts to walk ratio, 3.7 points higher than the team average ... made his first four appearances of the season in relief, compiling an 11.50 ERA; in his eight starts had an ERA of 2.83 ... was brilliant in his final six starts of the season, which came at No. 12 Arkansas, Washington State, Air Force, at No. 29 Wichita State, at Big 12 Tournament Champion Kansas and versus North Dakota State in the championship game of the D-I Independent Invitational; in those six starts had a 2-2 record and 1.71 ERA in 31.2 innings of work, while striking out 33 and walking only five ... that streak in the 4-2 win over the nationally-ranked Razorbacks (Apr. 19); tossed 5.1 innings in that game, allowing six hits and only one run while striking out a career-high seven as he got the no-decision ... came back to match that career-high in strikeouts against Air Force (May 2) on Senior Day; pitched five innings and allowed only two and no runs as the Bears won 20-4 ... struck out five in the start against Washington State (Apr. 23), where he suffered the loss ... pitched 6.2 innings at nationally-ranked Wichita State (May 9), allowing six hits and only one run while striking out five; got the hard-luck loss as the Bears lost 1-0 ... pitched only 3.2 innings at Kansas (May 14) before having to leave the game with a sore elbow; was very effective in that outing, however, as he allowed only four hits and struck out five in a game the Bears would go on to win 7-4 ... in career finale, earned All-Tournament honors by recording a victory against North Dakota State (May 21) at the Division I Independent Invitational Tournament; battling his injury, pitched six innings, allowing eight hits and only one run while striking out five as the Bears went on to win 6-1 and repeat as tournament champions ... struck out six in six innings in his first start of the season, a 9-7 victory over South Dakota State (Apr. 8) ... saw action in relief against each Lamar (Feb. 4), New Mexico State (Feb. 25), New Mexico (Mar. 4) and Sacramento State (Mar. 12).
2005: Appeared in 11 games, making a start and 10 relief appearances ... as season progressed, developed into Bears top setup option ... named Division I Independent Newcomer of the Week on May 3 after outstanding performance against Mountain West Champion BYU (Apr. 26); entered that contest in the fifth inning with the Bears trailing the nation's No. 3 hitting team 7-4 and held the Cougars to four hits and no runs over the final 4.1 innings while striking out five in earning his second victory of the season ... earned his first victory on April 22 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, pitching the final 2.1 innings and allowing no hits and no runs while striking out one as the Bears won 6-2 and handed TAMUCC ace Trey Hearne his first loss in 13 months ... matched his season-high of five strikeouts against Southern Utah (May 7), allowing four hits and walking none in 4.1 innings of work as Bears won 9-8 in extra innings ... compiled a 13.1 scoreless innings streak during the month of April (beginning at Southern Utah) and through the middle of May (ending at Wichita State) ... inherited a team-high 15 runners during the season and allowed only four to score ... lone start came at Creighton (Mar. 18), where he lasted 1.2 innings and allowed seven earned runs. Prior to UNC: Spent the 2003 season at Colby (Kan.) Community College ... played the 2004 season at Lamar Community College, where his team finished 50-12 and finished the year ranked No. 8 nationally ... was named NJCAA National Pitcher of the Month in April.
