2006: Appeared in 15 games, starting 14 times, in his first year with the program ... only relief appearance came in the season finale, when he pitched three innings in earning his first save of the season, as he allowed only two hits while striking out one n a 6-1 victory over North Dakota State (May 21) in the championship game of the Division I Independent Invitational ... in the first game of that tournament, also against NDSU (May 18), pitched six innings in the start, allowing eight hits and only two runs while striking out five ... was named to the All-Tournament team at the event after registering a 2.00 ERA in nine innings of work and leading the Bears to the team title for the second straight year ... best start of the season came at Texas A&M (Feb. 19), where he allowed six hits and two runs in eight innings of work but suffered the hard-luck 2-0 defeat ... pitched six strong innings against Air Force (Apr. 4), allowing six hits and one unearned run, but got the no-decision as the Bears lost 3-1 after managing only two hits ... picked up his first victory in his first appearance, lasting 6.2 innings and allowing 10 hits and two runs while striking out three in a 11-7 win over Lamar (Feb. 4) at the UTPA Classic in Edinburg, Texas ... also was victorious against South Dakota State (Apr. 9), allowing 10 hits and seven runs in six innings, did strike out a career-high seven batters ... also struck out five against BYU (Mar. 24), an outing where he pitched eight innings and allowed four hits and one run, but the Bears lost 3-2 in extra innings ... returned to his home state of New Mexico to face the Lobos (Mar. 5) in front of family and friends (grew up 40 miles east of Albuquerque); allowed nine runs in four innings of work that night.

Prior to UNC: Played two seasons at Lamar Community College for coach Scott Crampton ... in 2005, struck out 117 batters and walked only 27 in 84 innings of work and earned first-team all-region honors ... had a 9-1 overall record and 2.36 ERA while hurling seven complete games and four shutouts ... Running Lopes won regional championship each year he was there, including in 2005 when team was 51-11 and Empire Conference champions as well ... as a junior, compiled an 8-2 record and 2.29 ERA.

Prep: 2003 graduate of Moriarty High School ... played for coach Michael Chavez ... as a senior, was a first-team all-conference selection as a pitcher and a second-team selection as an outfielder ... hit over .400 during his senior year ... was a second-team all-conference selection as a pitcher during his junior season (2002) ... team finished third in the state his junior year and were state runners-up his senior season ... also played basketball ... member of the National Honor Society and an honor roll selection.
