SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - In the first of a three-game series, the University of Northern Colorado (5-9) baseball team fell to Missouri State University (9-4), 14-4 at Hammons Field. Junior first baseman Kevin Sandberg had three RBI with his fourth home run of the year in the top of the first inning, but the Bears were only able to get one more run across the plate, scoring in the top of the sixth inning. The Bears had four runs on eight hits, but were hindered by three errors. Missouri State scored 14 runs on 17 hits, scoring five in the bottom of the second, three in the fifth, one each in the sixth and seventh and four in the eighth. Senior left-handed pitcher Jon Klausing started on the hill for the Bears, pitching 4.2 innings, giving up eight runs, six earned on 11 hits with four strikeouts and four walks in 28 batters faced. Senior right-handed pitcher Dan Kazell threw the final 3.1 innings, surrendering six runs, four earned on six hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Tim Clubb threw 5.2 innings for Missouri State, giving up all four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and two walks, while Jon Barnes pitched the remaining 3.1 with no runs on no hits with one walk and three strikeouts. The two Bears teams face off tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Central. |
