Player Profile
Position:
Head Women's Coach (11th season)

Alma Mater:
North Dakota State, 1986

Jack Maughan enters his 11th season directing the women's golf program at the University of Northern Colorado in 2005-06 as he helps the program continue its reclassification process to Division I. The program will enter the Big Sky Conference beginning in 2006-07.

Maughan became head coach of both the men's and women's teams in 1995, when the women's program was instituted, and relinquished the men's duties at the end of the 2002-03 season to concentrate on the women's team and also his duties as head wrestling coach.

"I definitely have more time now," Maughan said. "When you spread yourself between two golf teams and wrestling, it can be chaotic at times. With the move to Division I it is nice that I have more time to help out the women's team."

The 2003-04 year marked the first year of Division I play for the program and the 2004-05 schedule brought an even tougher slate of Division I teams as the Bears continue their four-year transition.

"Obviously the move brings a higher level of play," Maughan added. "But when we were Division II, the top teams were as good as most Division I teams. The biggest difference is in our minds; we need to have the belief mentality that we can compete against top Division I programs."

Under his direction, the women's team has continually improved. Maughan has coached 14 all-conference performers, nine of those coming when the Bears were a member of the Division II North Central Conference (NCC). In the 1999 and 2000 season, Maughan helped the team to back-to-back NCC Championships and was honored as the conference Coach of the Year in each of those seasons.

Twice he helped coach individuals to NCC medalist titles (Cecilia Ruebling in 1999 and 2000) and two other times had individuals finish as the overall runner-up.

The 2002-03 season marked a banner campaign for the women's golf program, as the team finished third at the NCAA Division II Championships, the highest place finish in school history. On the way to the NCAA Championships, the Bears captured the North Regional crown for the first time in school history and Maughan was named Regional Coach of the Year for the third season in a row (2001-03).

Maughan helped Emily Russell, whose third place individual performance at the 2003 NCAA Championships was the highest in school history, earn NCGA All-American honors in 2002-03, as she became the second Bears golfer to earn that award (and first since the 1981 season when the team competed under AIAW rules). That year the UNC team had a 94-8 record in head-to-head competition and won eight of the 13 tournaments they entered. That year freshman Megan Gutenkauf also finished in the top-20 at the NCAAs.

Russell finished her career in 2003-04 by being named the Division I Independent co-Golfer of the Year as she finished her outstanding career having finished in the top-10 in 31 of 40 tournaments and finishing outside of the top-20 only four times. Her 77.5 stroke average as a senior also established a new school record.

Russell and Gutenkauf were each named to the 2003-04 Division I All-Independent team while three Bears, Gutenkauf and freshmen Jenny Henderson and Tina Bickford, were each All-Independent honorees in 2004-05. Henderson was a first-team selection, one of only two freshmen on the first-team, while Gutenkauf and Bickford were each second-team picks.

During his tenure as the men's golf coach, Maughan helped the program to NCC Championships in 1995 and 2001 and Kai Koponen to individual medalist honors in 1998.

Maughan has held the position of Northern Colorado's wrestling coach since 1987. Maughan-led wrestling squads have enjoyed success both at the conference and national levels. In his tenure as head coach of that program, he has coached three NCAA Champions and 46 All-Americans and led the team to seven top-10 national finishes. He serves as the president of the National Wrestling Coaches Association. In 2004, Maughan earned his 100th dual victory on the mat and a year later he scored his first dual match victory over his father, the head coach at North Dakota State, in 19 tries.

A 1986 graduate of North Dakota State University, Maughan was a two-time wrestling All-American for the Bison. He earned his master's degree in physical education and athletic administration from Northern Colorado in 1989.

Maughan and his wife Brenda were married in the summer of 2004 and welcomed their first child, Henry Buck, on Jan. 25, 2005. They reside in Windsor, Colo.
