Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - On the final day of the Capital Classic, the University of Northern Colorado softball team fell to 6-25 on the year with a 4-2 defeat at the hands of host Sacramento State.

In the first three innings, the Bears had an answer every time the Hornets got on the board. Sacramento State scored one in the top of the second, but NC answered with one in the bottom half. Courtney Maihi led off the inning with a single to right field and moved to second on a ground out by Katelyn Landorf and advanced to third on a ground out by Kaylyn James. After Abby Turner walked, the pair executed a double-steal, with Maihi crossing home plate and Turner taking second, but she was stranded.

The Hornets added another in the third, but again the Bears answered. Jessie Schoepflin walked to begin the inning and advanced to second on a single by Kelli Henderson. After a Hornet pitching change, Hillarie Van Otterloo had a bunt single to load the bases and Schoepflin scored when Mackenzie Barrett was hit by a pitch.

Sacramento State scored one run in each of the next two innings, but this time the Bears had no answers offensively, falling by the final of 4-2. Sacramento State scored four runs on 10 hits with one error, while the Bears scored two runs on five hits and committed four errors.

Van Otterloo pitched the complete game, allowing four runs (two earned) on 10 hits walking just one and striking out five in the contest. Sacramento State used two pitchers in the contest.

Northern Colorado will now play at Fresno State on Tuesday in a double header beginning at 6:00 p.m. (Pacific) and a double header at San Jose State on Wednesday before returning home from California.
